Where is the spare tire on the Nissan Leaf?

It’s good to know if your Nissan leaf has a spare tire before you need to use it.  Having an idea of what your options are is definitely worth thinking about before one of your tires has a puncture or blow out.

So the question is – Where is the spare tire on the Nissan Leaf?

The answer is it depends where in the world you bought your Nissan Leaf as not all Nissan Leafs are the same.

Some come with a space-saving tire and some come with an Emergency Tire Puncture Repair Kit.

Let’s get into this…

Is there a spare tire on a US-sold Nissan Leaf?

Unfortunately, Nissan Leafs sold in the US do not come with a spare tire.  In fact, not only do they not come with a spare tire but they aren’t even equipped with a space-saving tire.

The difference between a spare tire and a space-saving tire is that a spare tire is a full-sized tire just like the four that are currently fitted to your Nissan Leaf.

A space-saving tire is a tire that is made of solid rubber and is much thinner.  This makes it easier for the manufacturer to find room for it in the car, usually underneath the floor of the trunk or underneath the car chassis itself.

It’s recommended that space-saving tires aren’t used for any further than 80km.  Also, a car shouldn’t be driven any faster than 80kph when using a space-saving tire.  They are designed to try to get you to the nearest garage so that you can get your full tire repaired or replaced.

The US sold Nissan Leaf does come with an Emergency Tire Puncture Repair Kit, which essentially is a bottle of goop and an air compressor.

This can be found in the left-hand side compartment, built into the cavity of the trunk wall.

By connecting the bottle of goop to the air compressor, the sticky goop which acts as a sealant will be spread around the inside of the tire and seal the hole.  The tire should then inflate using compressed air.

Although the repair kit isn’t an ideal solution (as sometimes they don’t fix the issue) it’s better than nothing.

If you need a better solution for this then spare tires and spare space-saving tires are available from a few sources including eBay.  The only trouble is that you will have to find space in your boot for this.

As you might not want to constantly use your boot space for this, perhaps just taking a spare tire on longer journeys would be a happy compromise?

Is there a spare tire on a UK-sold Nissan Leaf?

Unfortunately, the vast majority of Nissan Leafs sold in the UK do not come with a spare tire.  In fact, not only do they not come with a spare tire but they aren’t even equipped with a space-saving tire.

Starting from the Nissan Leaf 2018 edition, spare tires were offered to buyers as an optional extra, therefore your Nissan may indeed have a spare tire but you will need to check.  This is especially true if you are buying the Nissan Leaf second-hand.

The spare tire can be found underneath the car chassis itself towards the back of the vehicle.  Please note that the spare tire is not located under the boot floor.
